Greta Van Fleet is a unique phenomenon. Consisting of three members (Josh, Jake, and Sam Kizska) and drummer Danny Wagner, this quartet has managed to closely replicate the sound of our ancestors' idols, Led Zeppelin. The sound, vocals, structure, and style of the musicians are faithful to the classic rock legends. The uninitiated listener might think they're hearing Zeppelin rarities. Furthermore, they're one of the very few young bands to be picked up by a major label and invested in them. The result is Greta Van Fleet's debut album, Anthem of the Peaceful Army. However, don't think the band had no material before. Two EPs, Black Smoke Rising and From the Fires, have already generated some buzz, and the song "Black Smoke Rising" was included in Billboard's list of the 25 best rock songs of 2017. In 2017, the song truly felt like a nostalgic dive into the 1970s. This same technique doesn't work so well in the anthem of the peaceful army. The album contains 11 tracks, but less than half have recognizable qualities that wouldn't be associated with Zep. This is both a plus and a minus. On the one hand, it's very refreshing to hear good old rock 'n' roll from a very young band. It's great to hear those same vocals and drive, enjoy the wild riffs, rejoice that "the music of our ancestors" can still draw crowds of teenagers today, and smile at the sight of "Anthem of the Peaceful Army" topping modern, reputable rock charts.
