Yuriy P. - 10.08.2024 The story of Mahogany Rush is no less interesting than the music of this hard rock trio: when teenager Frank Marino was hospitalized after a car accident, he was "visited by the spirit of Jimi Hendrix and given a series of guitar lessons." After being discharged from the hospital, Marino, who had never touched a guitar before, immediately began playing in a manner close to both the great Jimi and Jerry Garcia. After that, it is difficult to argue with fans of spiritualism!
Having selected a bass guitarist and a drummer, Marino began recording his debut album, which was released on the tiny Montreal record company Cote - this was the work of a solid guitar master. Marino's group did not recognize any compromises and performed powerful hard rock, built on the structures of late white blues.
However, during the work on the second disc, Mahogany Rush abruptly changed their orientation and diversified the compositions with elements of jazz-rock, while Marino's guitar acquired a sound somewhat reminiscent of the "trademark" of Alan Holdsworth; special attention was also paid to the lyrics. Despite the obvious musical progress, critics reacted coolly to the Mahogany Rush experiment, and the "Grand Funk Railroad phenomenon" was repeated: from the point of view of listeners, the group had no equal, and Mahogany Rush tours invariably collected full stadiums
