Yuriy P. - 24.03.2021 The group's second album presented the progress to the public. Moreover, progress in everything - from the sound, to the complexity, and simply incredible originality of the material that went beyond everything - no one played metal in those days, no one even stood close to them. Rhythm guitars began to sound simply marvelously low and harsh, especially against the background of the last album. Now, in addition to the severity of thrash, a very multifaceted and interesting melody has appeared, which consists in complicating the instrumental moves and in some ordering of them - you can easily isolate individual riffs and remember them for a very, very long time. The lyrics in the album have also become more complicated and took on a more sophisticated form - the lyrics have a deep meaning, and now they are perceived unambiguously and positively. The only thing that does not look so bright against the background of such a masterpiece is Hatfield's vocals. It is not bad at all, but nothing special stands out. Speaking directly about the material, I will say that it is very difficult to highlight anything, but I will try. The best thing in Metallica I still think is “Fade To Black”, for its originality and technical copulation of the band's classics with an acoustic guitar, and simply divine lyrics - it is listened to just superbly, and not only to me. Many of you know perfectly well what I mean, and if you suddenly don’t know, you should definitely find out! I will also note two equally interesting and driving things. They are the action films "Ride The Lightning" and "Creeping Death" performed in the band's classic vein. And, of course, I can't help but put in a word for the instrumental and complicated piece “The Call Of Ktulu”, which is very difficult to find equal in terms of content. And finally, I will say the final word. With the release of this album, the group simply shocked the whole world with its heaviness and innovative sound, characterized by such technique and originality that the rest of the bands needed at least three more years to get closer to this masterpiece. A must-have for all time.
