Alexander S. - 07.10.2018 About program albums of Nine Inch Nails, perhaps, it is difficult to write. I remember that I began my acquaintance with the works of Reznor and Co. from this album and was fascinated by the combination of samples, ambient electronics and live instruments, the atmosphere of decadence ... Spiral is probably not as melodic as the famous "The Fragile" (1999 ), but incredibly gloomy, for it leads the lyrical hero directly to the brink of suicide. I would especially note only the sadom-maso-anthem "Closer", becoming the blues-noise "Ruiner", the terrible "The Becoming", another anthem of the decadent love "Reptile" and the hysterical "Hurt", genetically rewritten at one time by Johnny Cash. The moment of catharsis is, of course, "The Downward Spiral" - a terrible composition-neurosis. That does not mean that the rest of things are passable, not at all! And they are all imbued with the painful sound of Reznor's piano, which makes this album, in my opinion, well recognizable. There are two more songs in the Japanese and deluxe editions: "Burn" and "Dead Souls", which I, unfortunately, do not have.
In general, the album is in any case worth a closer look. That's just not during the blues, but what's good, finish just like a lyrical hero ...
