Description: | Richland Woman Blues by Maria Muldaur, released 4 September 2020, includes the following tracks: "It's A Blessing", "Put It Right Here", "My Man Blues", "Far Away Blues" and more.
This version of Richland Woman Blues comes as a 1xCD. - JAPAN IMPORTIf you pick up Richland Woman Blues remembering Maria Muldaur's erotic recording of the song with Jim Kweskin's Jug Band, you may be surprised at how her voice has changed, and yet how impossible it is to mistake her for anyone else. She can still negotiate the leaps and slides that seductively shaded the original "Richland Woman Blues" or "Midnight at the Oasis", but her voice is deeper and she commands a rasping growl-characteristics eminently suitable for the blues and gospel songs assembled here. The album's inspiration was a visit to the grave of the great guitar-playing blueswoman Memphis Minnie, and she selects four of her songs, two as conversational duets with Alvin Youngblood Hart and two with the artful guitar of Roy Rogers.Recorded at Dave Wellhausen Studios, San Francisco; Small Treasures Studios, San Jose; U.C. Santa Cruz Music Hall; Peter Axtell Studio; Oasis Studios; Grandpa's Farm; Sundae Sound Studios, Calgary.

A trip to Memphis Minnie's grave site in Walls, Mississippi several years ago inspired Richland Woman Blues. On the 25th recording of her wide-ranging career, Maria Muldaur celebrates one of the most profound inspirations of American music - the early blues of the 1920's and 30's. On this self-produced album, she collaborates with many of her contemporaries, all of whom she considers 'keepers of the flame'. |
