â??TURN OF THE CARDSâ? wurde im März 1974 von der hoch talentierten Sängerin Annie Haslam, Michael Dunford (Akkustikgitarre), John Tout (Keyboards, Gesang), Jon Camp (Bass, Gesang) und Terry Sullivan (Drums, Percussion) in den De Lane Lea Studios in Wembley, North London aufgenommen.
Die Band arbeitete symphonische Orchester Arrangements in ihr Material ein, daraus entstanden Klassiker wie â??Running Hardâ??, â??Things I Donâ??t Understandâ?? und â??Mother Russiaâ??. Mit den Songs â??Cold is Beingâ?? und â??Black Flameâ?? wurde â??TURN OF THE CARDSâ? endgültig ein Album, das als eines der Besten von Renaissance bezeichnet wurde.

With Annie Haslam as lead vocalist, the group had a great advantage over most other bands whose singers lacked her finesse and purity of tone. "Turn of the Cards" was the their fifth album and was first released in 1974. The band's superb vocal harmonies and top class musicianship is in evidence on this six track collection of distinctive songs. Many connoisseurs regard such extended works as "Running Hard" and the "Mother Russi"' suite to be among their finest works and John Tout's rhapsodic piano playing is another highlight of this pearl of an album.
