Here are the debut recordings of jazz giant and tenor saxophonist Walter Theodore "Sonny" Rollins, starting in 1949 when he was in his teens, and then on to his subsequent progress at the height of the be-bop era with sessions under the leadership of J.J. Johnson, Miles Davis and Bud Powell. The set closes with Rollins' first full recording date leading his own group, a quartet featuring Art Blakey. Other featured musicians include Babs Gonzalez, Fats Navarro and John Lewis.
