Savatageâ??s Grand 1995 Concept Album â??Dead Winter Deadâ? was unquestionably an important, albeit transitional, record for Savatage. It boosted the groupâ??s European following and it found Oliva reclaiming a more active role in the band.
â??On â??Dead Winter Deadâ?? we completed the storytelling we started on â??Streetsâ??, and we also took the counterpoint we established on â??Handful of Rainâ?? even furtherâ?, said Paul Oâ??Neill.

The musical basis has also undergone significant changes, almost every song on this album has a full-fledged symphony orchestra. In combination with soulful texts, such a neoclassical sound creates a soft and gentle atmosphere, there is an amazing feeling of being there, as if you were right there - in Yugoslavia, among the horrors of war. John Oliva added fuel to the general cauldron of raging emotions, a couple of songs he sang (“I Am” and “Doesn't Matter Anyway”) simply amaze with their anger and negativity, John’s infernal voice is the best suited for the parties of villains. Among the most wonderful tracks you can distinguish the touching lag "This Is The Time", the hurricane symphonic action movie "Dead Winter Dead", and simply the breathtaking instrumental "Mozart And Madness". Also, Savatage could not do (and even less so on such an orchestral album) without its signature polyphony, it can be heard in the pair of the final tracks "One Child" and "Not What You See". Summing up, we can conclude that, this disc may not be the best work of the group, but it definitely deserves attention. Mostly because of the awesome atmosphere and mood that comes with listening to Dead Winter Dead. Great job.

One of the finest moments from this symphonic metal band that turned into trans siberian orchestra!! If you like Queen in a more metal way this is it!
