Conçu à l?origine comme une pièce de théâtre puis adapté en disque studio par l?artiste lui-même et sa femme Kathleen Brennan pour la scène du Steppenwolf Theatre à Chicago en 1986?87 : ce projet met en valeur le mélange singulier de rock expérimental et d?histoires théâtrales propres à Tom Waits autour du personnage errant de Frank O?Brien ? incarnation parfaite de la poésie urbaine et décalée chère au chanteur-compositeur américain. Parmi les titres marquants figure « Way Down in the Hole », devenu célèbre grâce à son utilisation dans la série culte « The Wire ».
Tom Waits s?est imposé depuis les années 1970 comme une icône musicale avec sa voix rocailleuse et ses compositions mêlant jazz sombrement poétique et folk-blues cabossé ; il compte plusieurs Grammy Awards ainsi que des albums majeurs tels que « Rain Dogs », « Swordfishtrombones » ou encore « Mule Variations ».
