The fourth studio album by the American heavy metal band Savatage, released in 1987. In 2017 and 2019, respectively, Loudwire and Metal Hammer ranked it as the 22nd and 8th best power metal album of all time.

This is one of the best accessible "satanic" metal albums of all time. The riffs and guitar tone are immense, the rhythms rock solid and the vocals penetrate the brain in just the right way.

Despite the predominance of positive aspects, the album has some understatement, as evidenced by the presence of such things as “White Witch” and “Devastation”, showing that the group was clearly at a crossroads, not fully daring to follow the direction set in “Prelude to Madness / Hall of the Mountain King. " Some arrangements, compared to the “Gutter Ballet” that followed a year later, lack development and completeness. Throughout the entire album, the album is distinguished by a certain contrast between hard heavy metal fighters and more detailed compositions with a gloomy atmosphere. In addition, a rather crude, somewhat sloppy sound evokes analogies with the first Savatage recordings.
However, on the other hand, “Hall of the Mountain King” is a 100% sincere work in which you will not find a single gram of contrivedness. The album is doubly valuable in that it served as the foundation for the further development of the group, largely determining the unique style of Savatage.

Savatage were always somewhat of an underrated metal act. This record showed that the metal world can seriously count on these guys. An epic release!

5 stars for music, 3 stars to edition. I was waiting a good dynamic re-master, but this sounds like a old edition. No need to purchase 2011 editions, old is good enough. Despite the critic, music is still great. A classic Savatage -album!
