Description:Purpose + Grace by Martin Simpson, released 5 September 2011, includes the following tracks: "Brothers Under The Bridge", "Brother Can You Spare A Dime", "In The Pines", "Banjo Bill" and more. This version of Purpose + Grace comes as a 1xCD. -
Purpose + Grace takes it's very apposite title from the great American songwriter Yip Harburg (composer of 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow', 'Brother Can You Spare A Dime' and 'Only A Paper Moon') "I am one of the last of a small tribe of troubadours who still believe that life is a beautiful and exciting journey with a purpose and grace well worth singing about." With guest appearances from Richard Thompson, June Tabor, Dick Gaughan and Fay Hield, the album marks a bold and confident step for Simpson. Building upon the strengths of Prodigal Son and True Stories, like a movie producer, he conceived the whole project over a number of months and then invited some of his favorite musicians to bring their stellar talents to the recording sessions. The material shifts from Anglo-American ballads, Scots and English traditional songs to new compositions from Bruce Springsteen, Richard Thompson, the aforementioned Yip Harburg and Martin Simpson.
"Purpose + Grace" is a captivating CD release by acclaimed British guitarist and folk singer Martin Simpson, produced by the renowned label Topic Records. This album showcases Simpson's extraordinary ability to blend traditional English folk with contemporary influences, featuring both original compositions and fresh interpretations of classic songs. The collection highlights his virtuosic guitar work, emotive vocals, and deep respect for storytelling through music. Notable tracks include collaborations with other prominent artists from the folk scene, further enriching the listening experience. Martin Simpson is widely regarded as one of the finest acoustic guitarists in the world. With a career spanning over four decades, he has received numerous accolades including multiple BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. His innovative approach combines elements of British, American, and Irish traditions while maintaining a distinctive personal style that resonates deeply with audiences worldwide. Topic Records stands as one of the oldest independent record labels specializing in folk music since its founding in 1939. Renowned for nurturing legendary talents such as Nic Jones and Shirley Collins alongside Martin Simpson himself, Topic continues to be at the forefront of preserving and promoting high-quality traditional music.
