 | | Description: | Charlie Reynolds was just one of many black entrepreneurs in 1950s Los Angeles who started his own independent record company, hoping to cash in on Americaâ??s post-war rhythm and blues juggernaut. As the owner of the popular Flash Record Shop at 623 East Vernon Avenue, he had a first-hand look at what customers, especially teenagers, were buying. Operating out of his back room, he released 31 blues, R&B, doo wop, and proto-soul platters between 1955 and 1959. One of them even spent a couple of weeks in the national Top 40 charts. But as Reynolds soon discovered, the indie record business was a hustlerâ??s game. The increasing costs of payola and his distributorsâ?? refusal to pay royalties for the last single until the next one started selling ate up his profits. He eventually let Flash Records lapse quietly into history. Still, as this new 2-CD, 60-song package attests, Reynolds had a great run and produced more than his share of exciting and worthy material. - UK two CD set that offers the first comprehensive overview of Flash Records, the Los Angeles-based '50s label that specialized in Doo Wop, Blues and R&B. Charlie Reynolds' label grew out of his record store - one of the most important stops for collectors right up until it closed in the '80s. It issued 31 singles between 1955 and 1959. None of them sold particularly well (that is why they are so rare and collectable) and the label lapsed. There's something for everyone in this smorgasbord of Blues, Doo Wop, R&B and the occasional Mambo. The CD contains just about all the sides released by the label plus five previously unissued tracks. Ace Deluxe.Card outer sleeve contains 2 CD jewel case. Includes a 40 page booklet with notes on [l92762] Records and artists by Jim Dawson. Also includes a Flash Records Discography.
All tracks are in mono. Tracks 1-13, 2-1, 2-12, 2-23, 2-24 and 2-29 are previously unreleased Flash recordings.
