Van der Graaf Generators LeadsÃ¤nger, Keyboarder und Songschreiber Peter Hammill und sein erstes Soloalbum - benannt nach einer Kombination aus Schach und Tarotkarten - "Fool's Mate". Viele fragten sich, warum Hammill ein Soloalbum genau zu dem Zeitpunkt verÃ¶ffentlichte, als die VDGG in Progressive-Rock-Kreisen gerade anfing, durchzustarten. Er erklÃ¤rte, dass er das BedÃ¼rfnis hatte, sie aufzunehmen, bevor sie in seinem Leben an Bedeutung verloren. Fool's Mate" unterscheidet sich von VDGGs Material dadurch, dass es mehr Mainstream ist und grÃ¶Ã?tenteils auf Klavier und akustischer Gitarre basiert. Aber Hammill ist immer noch in der Lage, die GroÃ?artigkeit ihres Stils zu vermitteln, wie man an den mitreiÃ?enden KlÃ¤ngen von "Re-Awakening" hÃ¶ren kann. Und der Schlusstrack des Albums, "I Once Wrote Some Poems", deutet den Stil an, den Hammill in zukÃ¼nftigen VerÃ¶ffentlichungen noch stÃ¤rker aufgreifen wird -

Peter Hammill is one of the most unique and influential voices in prog. He was the pivotal figure in VDGG, who formed in 1967 at Manchester University. His obsession with lost love, lost faith, time, space and existence itself are the cornerstones of both his work with the band and his solo albums. This Reissue of the original 1970 release of 'Fool's Mate' features the 12 original tracks and 5 bonus tracks of the 'Early Demo Versions' for 'Re-Awakening', 'Summer Song in the Autumn', 'The Birds', 'Sunshine' & 'Happy'. Charisma. 2005.

Originally released in 1971 as Charisma CAS 1037. Tracks 13 to 17 are previously unreleased demos recorded live at Trident Studios January 1971. Recorded at Trident Studios, London, April 20/21/27/28 1971. ...and the Fluctuating Chorale: Guy, Hugh, Dave, Ray, John, Norman, Alastair, John, Peter. Analogue to digital transfers at Abbey Road Studios, October 2004. Grateful thanks to Peter Hammill, David Jackson, Hugh Banton and Guy Evans for their much appreciated assistance and co-operation with this CD reissue.
