Transcription is the genre most generously represented in Godowsky's compositional output, and the one for which he is best known; he made piano transcriptions (and études), of various kinds, from works by Bach, Schubert, Chopin, and others. But he also left another body of works whose originality and coherence continue to surprise: his piano paraphrases. This album features virtuosic re-compositions by several 19th and 20th century composers, some quite faithful to the originals, others deviating drastically from their sources.
