 | | Description: | Glenn Gould Plays Bach: Goldberg Variations Bwv 988 - The Historic 1955 Debut Recording; The 1981 Digital Recording by Glenn Gould, released 23 August 2012.
This version of Glenn Gould Plays Bach: Goldberg Variations Bwv 988 - The Historic 1955 Debut Recording; The 1981 Digital Recording comes as a 2xCD. - GOLDBERG VARIATIONS 1955 & 1981Glenn Gould Plays Bach: Goldberg Variations [1955 & 1981] The clear-cut rhythms, riveting articulation, and contrapuntal acumen of Glenn Gould's 1955 debut Goldberg Variations characterize this 1981 remake to strikingly different results. This later version is more deliberate in pacing, stark in expression, thoughtful with ornamentation, and tightly organized (if a mite theatrical) in terms of tempo relationships. Whereas there are no repeats from 1955, Gould now observes "A" section repeats in the canons, the Fughetta, and other fugue-like variations. The rapid, cross- handed sequences still dazzle with pinpointed fingerwork, yet the slower tempos better serve the music's dance-like qualities.[Cat.no:]

The 1955 version, recorded when Gould was in his early twenties, is famous for its unprecedented clarity, fast tempi and almost crystalline articulation, which revolutionised how audiences heard this work. The 1981 remake presents a more contemplative and introspective view, with broader tempi, greater dynamic nuance and a deeply philosophical approach to phrasing and structure. Together, these interpretations offer a unique opportunity to experience how a singular artist can rethink and transform the same masterpiece across decades, turning this release into an essential reference for anyone interested in Bach performance and in the evolution of interpretative style on record.
Glenn Gould, the Canadian pianist, is one of the most distinctive and influential figures in 20th-century classical music. Known for his analytical intellect, unconventional performance habits and his decision to retire from the concert stage to focus on studio recording, he reshaped expectations of what a pianist could do in the recording era. His 1955 Goldberg Variations recording became an instant landmark and helped establish him internationally; his later Bach recordings, as well as major interpretations of works by composers such as Beethoven and others, cemented his reputation as a radical, probing musical thinker.
Sony Classical, the label behind this edition, is one of the world's most prominent classical music publishers and catalog custodians. As part of the broader Sony Music group, it maintains an extensive archive of historically important recordings and is known for carefully curated reissues, remasterings and artist collections. With a strong focus on audio quality, documentation and artistic integrity, Sony Classical has played a central role in preserving and presenting iconic performances from the 20th and 21st centuries, making key recordings such as Gould's Goldberg Variations accessible to new generations of listeners. | | | No. of tracks: |
