Description:
Als 1880 ein Schiff mit englischen Auswanderern auf der Fahrt nach Australien untergeht, verliert die 16-jährige Delie Gordon ihre Eltern und wird zur Vollwaise. Delie kann in letzter Sekunde vom Steuermann Tom Critchley vor dem Ertrinken gerettet werden. Ihre Tante Hester und ihr Onkel Charles nehmen sie zunächst bei sich auf, doch Tante Hester macht der Waisen das Leben schwer und tyrannisiert das junge Mädchen regelrecht. Durch einen Zufall trifft Delie ihren Lebensretter Tom wieder und beteiligt sich mit ihrem Erbe an seinem Flussdampfer. Dort lernt sie den Maat Brenton Edwards kennen und verliebt sich unsterblich in den raubeinigen Flussschiffer. Schließlich heiraten die beiden und betreiben zusammen einen eigenen Raddampfer. Sie wird nach einigen Schicksalsschlägen selbst Kapitänin, verwirklicht aber auch ihren Traum zu malen. - Trailer
