Description:	Simon (Émilien Néron) entdeckt sie im Klassenzimmer: seine Lehrerin Martine, mit einem Schal erhängt. Diese menschliche Katastrophe versucht die Schulleitung dann mit einer neuen Zimmerfarbe und einer Psychologin aufzuarbeiten. Und mit einer neuen Lehrkraft, dem Algerier Bachir Lazhar (Fellag). Nach einigen vor allem kulturell bedingten Startschwierigkeiten schafft es Bachir immer besser, den Draht zur Klasse zu finden. Dieser fällt es jedoch schwer, die Erinnerung über den Vorfall abzustreifen. Vor allem Simon und Alice (Sophie Nélisse) zeigen sich auffällig: Er reagiert mit Aggressivität, sie versucht den Selbstmord im Unterricht direkt zu adressieren. Bachir gibt sich ein und wird den Kindern eine Stütze - gleichzeitig sind die Kinder für ihn selbst eine Hilfe, denn auch er hat einen schrecklichen Schicksalsschlag zu verarbeiten. Doch über Bachir hängt ein Damoklesschwert: Als politischer Flüchtling ist sein Verfahren immer noch hängig. Wird es abgelehnt, kann Bachir von einem Tag auf den anderen abgeschoben werden.
