Welcome to 1996 in the Dance Years series. This was the year Trainspotting was released and dance was once again on a bit of an upward spiral, although the great days of the dance explosion lay ahead.
For my part, I had managed to persuade Radio 1 bosses Trevor Dann and Matthew Bannister to let me do something a little radical as part of a four hour Sunday show from 10am to 2pm. I had branded the last hour 1pm-2pm the Recovery Session - the breakfast show for ravers! The idea was that people were just getting up who'd been out the night before or in some cases were just about to go to bed after an all night session. It enabled us to get all kinds of fantastically weird callers on the show and we were able to champion all the new dance tunes coming through at the time slap bang in the middle of the day. The Recovery Session luckily quickly achieved a cult following so it was happy days.
Favourite clubs for me around this time included the legendary and very messy Progress in Derby!
Enjoy
