Marius Neset's new release Birds is a masterpiece, a through composed work that takes the listener on a journey, bringing together a world of influences with remarkable energy and creativity. It could sit as comfortably on a classical stage as in a jazz club. However, what impresses most is Neset's ability to combine the freedom of improvisation with the very composed passages. This occurs most remarkably in Spring Dance, which features Neset's highly talented sister Ingrid on flute. There are elements of Stravinsky, Charles Ives, Steve Reich, Wayne Shorter, Django Bates and Michael Brecker, but most of all you can hear Neset's original voice as he takes you through eleven compositions each with their own distinctive and wonderful character.
