Die Regisseurin Evelyn Schels begleitet ihn über mehrere Jahre aus nächster Nähe. Sie darf in seinem Familienalbum blättern, befragt seine Ehefrau sowie seine Weggefährten und zeigt in diesem fesselnden Film die wichtigsten Stationen seines Lebens. Baselitz gewährt uns einen einmaligen Einblick in das Zentrum seines künstlerischen Schaffens. Der Zuschauer darf so den sensiblen Entstehungsphasen seiner Bilder und Skulpturen beiwohnen, beobachtet seine Pinselstriche, sieht ihn mal zweifelnd, dann euphorisch und entdeckt neben dem Künstler Baselitz auch den Menschen. Der Dokumentarfilm GEORG BASELITZ ist ein aufmerksames, sehr privates und differenziertes Portrait über den Jahrhundertkünstler, dessen Leben und Werk untrennbar mit der deutschen Geschichte verknüpft sind.
