"Mortissa" (a strong independent woman) is an album of smyrneika/rebetiko songs in Greek and Turkish with musical roots in Anatolia. This music arose in the turbulent times of the 1920s. This is the music of the alternative and underground scenes and was once banned by both Greek and Turkish authorities. From the sleeve about recording and mixing: "Recorded in London by Joe Leach and Tim Burns (Cowshed Studio), Muharrem Karaer (Playground Studio), and Chris Morphitis (Limehouse Studio), and mixed by Jason Emberton, Westbourne Studios, London; except Nenni, recorded and mixed by Tahir Palali and To Dervisaki, recorded and mixed by Davide Salvietti (Hijaz Studio)."
