Description:	Berlin, 1933: Elsa (Romy Schneider) und Michel Wiener (Helmut Griem) nehmen den zwölfjährigen jüdischen Max Baumstein bei sich auf, nachdem sein Vater von der SA umgebracht wurde. Elsa reist mit ihm nach Paris, während ihr Mann nachkommen soll - aber nie ankommt. Sie schlägt sich in Paris als Sängerin durch und muss in der Absicht, ihrem Mann zu helfen, schwere persönliche Opfer bringen. Paris, 1981. Max (Michel Piccoli) ist ein vierzigjähriger Mann geworden.
