NEW TROLLS are unique in the history of Italian progressive rock music, having been around since the very beginning of “Rock Progressivo Italiano” subcultural phenomena, and still maintaining their presence today. The band was formed in 1966 from the ashes of musicians’ previous outfit, a beat-group THE TROLLS, and debuted next year with the single "Sensazioni", the first of a very long series of chart hitting songs. The band has gone through many line-up and name changes, as well as stylistic shifts. In 1971, NEW TROLLS released their “Concerto Grosso (№1)”, the trademark album that took the band in a new sympho-prog-rock direction and happened to be one of the foundation albums of Italian progressive music. Two years later, the band split for the first time due to a serious copyright conflict between two founding members, Vittorio De Scalzi and Nico Di Palo. The former continued in the sympho-prog direction under the name NEW TROLLS ATOMIC SYSTEM; the latter with the two other band members formed IBIS, a band oriented towards hard rock. However, the original line-up of NEW TROLLS was re-formed in 1975, and their second trademark album, “Concerto Grosso №2” was released next year. Since 1978, the band slowly begun to change their sympho-prog style in favor of melodic pop-rock producing some more commercially successful national hits. The story of NEW TROLLS continued through ‘80-00 and was surrounded by a renewed legal conflict between the founders, parallel activity of two different spin-off bands with the same repertoire, another reunion of De Scalzi and Di Palo, new recordings and re-issues… Released in 2013 by Warner Music Italia, “3CD Collection” includes 36 songs in chronological order from 1967 up to 1978, the most interesting and creative period of NEW TROLL career. Featuring both hit singles and highlights from the conceptual albums, this box-set is a perfect introduction to the band’s music. The only complaint is that the release doesn’t contain any booklet with the band’s brief bio or (even more important) credit references to the original albums from where the songs were taken. The only information printed is the names of songwriters and copyright details for each song. Anyway, it’s a worth buying compilation – much better than many other anthologies of NEW TROLLS.
