Description:Hot 'n' Heavy by Ethnic Heritage Ensemble W. Fareed Haque, released 15 March 2007, includes the following tracks: "Hot 'N' Heavy", "Black As Vera Cruz" and more. This version of Hot 'n' Heavy comes as a 1xCD. -
Kahil El'Zabar, drums, earth drums, kalimba; Corey Wilkes, trumpet, flugelhorn, percussion; Ernest Dawkins, alto and tenor saxophone, percussion; Fareed Haque, electric and acoustic guitar. In a Down Beat review of their previous Delmark album, Freedom Jazz Dance (517) Paul de Barros wrote "The forms being advanced here-or at least merged in a creative, new way-are African-American syncopation (funk, jazz) and the vertically integrated multiple parts of African drum ensemble music. With folkish simplicity and beguilingly subdued dynamics, Ethnic Heritage Ensemble-drums, guitar and two horns-achieves an effect something like an ad hoc percussion band walking the second line, with a little James Brown thrown in."
"Hot 'n' Heavy" is an expressive CD by the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble, released on the renowned jazz and blues label Delmark. The album continues the group's long-standing mission: to fuse the spiritual depth of African and African-American musical traditions with the freedom and intensity of modern jazz. Across the tracks, polyrhythmic percussion, soulful horn lines, and improvisational dialogues create a soundscape that is at once earthy, ritualistic, and forward-looking. "Hot 'n' Heavy" lives up to its title with grooves that feel raw and physical, yet it balances that power with reflective, almost meditative passages that invite deep listening. The CD is ideal for listeners who appreciate experimental jazz that remains rooted in tradition, and for anyone interested in the intersection of ancestral rhythms with contemporary improvisation.

The Ethnic Heritage Ensemble, founded by percussionist and multi-instrumentalist Kahil El'Zabar, is a pioneering ensemble of the Chicago jazz scene. Over decades, the group has become known for its unique blend of African percussion, spiritual jazz, and avant-garde improvisation. Their performances often feel like ceremonies, marked by call-and-response patterns, chanting, and a strong emphasis on groove. The Ensemble has released numerous albums on respected labels and toured internationally, earning critical acclaim in the jazz press for its innovative sound and its contribution to keeping African diasporic musical heritage alive within contemporary jazz. Their work is frequently celebrated for bridging tradition and experimentation in a way that is both accessible and profound.

Delmark, the manufacturer and label behind this CD, is one of the oldest independent jazz and blues labels in the United States. Founded in Chicago, Delmark has played a decisive role in documenting and promoting important artists from the city's vibrant jazz and blues scenes. With a catalog that spans classic Chicago blues, hard bop, avant-garde jazz, and beyond, Delmark has gained a reputation for artistic integrity and high-quality recordings. The label is respected among collectors, musicians, and critics alike for supporting innovative music and giving a platform to both established masters and adventurous, boundary-pushing artists such as the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble.

Excellent compositions from Kahil El Zabar; the guy has a great team to back him up on this. Very, very good!
