 | Description: | Ask any of the great guitar pickers who have emerged over the last four decades to name a primary influence and the response is likely to be "Tony" or "Rice" or, to avoid confusion, "Tony Rice.
There can be no doubt that Tony Rice's footprint on the time-line of guitar playing in bluegrass music is monumental.
"Guitar" was Tony Rice's first venture into recording and it still holds up as one of the great bluegrass guitar records ever issued. The album came to Rebel in a roundabout way. It was recorded in Lexington, Kentucky, first appeared on a record label in Japan, made its way back to Kentucky for release on a regional label that was later acquired by Rebel in the late 1970s. As Tony was working in banjo-great J. D. Crowe's band at the time, it was quite natural for Crowe, Tony's brother and mandolinist Larry Rice, and bassist Bobby Slone to provide the instrumental backing. Recorded at a time when progressive sounds and styles were treading on the traditional framework of bluegrass, "Guitar" was praised for walking the fine line of spotlighting Tony's prowess on the instrument while remaining very much a "band" recording.
With Tony in fine form vocally and his amazing guitar work on full display, this is where you will find his signature versions of "Freeborn Man," "Doing My Time," "Nine Pound Hammer," and "John Hardy" â?? plus the closing track, a nine-minute tour-de-force rendition of "Lonesome Reuben." - "Guitar" is a celebrated CD album by the legendary bluegrass guitarist Tony Rice, released under the renowned Rebel Records label. This collection showcases Rice's extraordinary flatpicking skills and his innovative approach to acoustic guitar within the bluegrass and Americana genres. The album features both instrumental tracks and vocal numbers, highlighting Rice?s technical mastery as well as his emotive musical expression. With intricate arrangements of traditional tunes alongside original compositions, "Guitar" stands out as an essential recording for fans of acoustic music.
Tony Rice was one of the most influential acoustic guitarists in American roots music. Over his illustrious career, he collaborated with icons like J.D. Crowe, Ricky Skaggs, and David Grisman, helping to redefine modern bluegrass through albums such as "Manzanita," "Church Street Blues," and work with The Bluegrass Album Band. His virtuosic playing style set new standards for generations of musicians.
Rebel Records is a respected independent label specializing in bluegrass and old-time music since 1960. Known for its commitment to authentic roots sounds, Rebel has been home to many genre-defining artists including Ralph Stanley & The Clinch Mountain Boys and Del McCoury. | | Producer: |
