Description:On a hot August day in 1958 in Delaney, Arkansas, a group of local musicians joined David Mangurian and Don Hill for an impromptu recording session in a bare-walled room at the back of the local schoolhouse. The guitar playing, foot stomping, and washboard-woodblock playing was interrupted only twice: once for a cooling swim in the nearby White River, and again for dinner. Older townsfolk and younger musicians many of whom had never seen a tape recorder before produced a range of old tunes combined with the modern influences of country and western recording artists and amplification. Liner notes include a vivid description of the recording session and an introduction to the country music of the Folkways Records catalogue.
Liner note credits for the music are fairly incomplete as given by David Mangurian. All recordings were made over twelve hours on one day in August 1958 as community musicians came and went. The only two musicians to be at the session all day are brothers John D. & Lee Mounce. Per the liner notes, instruments were passed around during the recordings so several people played different instruments at different times. The overall group name of Delaney Musician Group is used as an umbrella term when no specific notes are given per song. This is how the Folkways database catalogs these recordings as well. © 1964 Folkways Records & Service Corp. ? © 2007 Smithsonian Folkways Recordings Professionally printed CDr on-demand reissue of the 1964 LP on Folkways Records.
