Description:With over 14,000 copies sold, this album was released for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's 2004 exhibit "Byzantium: Faith and Power." It features Byzantine music from 1261 to 1557, including two laments, one in Green, and one in Latin and Old French, for the Fall of Constantinople in 1453. Vocal ensemble Cappella Romana combines passion with scholarship in it's exploration of early and contemporary music of the Christian East and West. It's name refers to the medieval Greek concept of the Roman oikoumene (inhabited world), which embraced Rome and Western Europe as well as the Byzantine Empire of Constantinople ("New Rome") and it's Slavic commonwealth.
"Music of Byzantium" is a captivating CD release by Alexander Lingas and Cappella Romana, produced by the renowned label Cappella Records. This album invites listeners on an immersive journey into the sacred and secular sounds of Byzantine musical tradition, featuring authentic performances that bring to life centuries-old chants and hymns. The ensemble's meticulous attention to historical detail creates an evocative soundscape that transports audiences straight into the heart of ancient Constantinople. Cappella Romana, under the direction of founder Alexander Lingas, has established itself as one of the world?s leading vocal ensembles specializing in early music from Eastern Christian traditions. Their recordings have garnered international acclaim for their scholarly rigor and emotive power, with previous albums such as "Lost Voices of Hagia Sophia" receiving critical praise and charting highly in classical music rankings. Cappella Records stands out as a distinguished label dedicated to high-quality choral recordings, particularly those exploring lesser-known repertoires from both Western and Eastern liturgical traditions. With a commitment to artistic excellence and cultural preservation, Cappella Records continues to enrich global appreciation for sacred music through its innovative releases.
