Description:Harlem River by Kevin Morby, released 21 November 2013. This version of Harlem River comes as a 1xCD. -
2013 solo debut from songwriter Kevin Morby, best known for his work as the singer/guitarist for Brooklyn band the Babies and bassist for Woods. The Kansas City native and new Los Angeles resident calls the record 'an homage to New York City,' his adopted home for the past five years. Harlem River features eight interweaving tales of tragedy and misfortune from a series of desperate characters playing out their dramas with the city as backdrop. A departure from some of the signature sounds of his better known projects, Morby's solo material glistens with a haunting intimacy. He maintains that the songs are about other people, but it's hard not to feel a piece of him in each one - a half-imagined, half-painfully personal world of lost love, addiction, violence and prayers for the departed.
"Harlem River" is the debut solo album by American singer-songwriter Kevin Morby, released in 2013 on CD format by the independent label Woodsist. The album features a blend of folk-rock and indie influences, marked by poetic lyrics and atmospheric arrangements that evoke both urban landscapes and introspective journeys. Kevin Morby, formerly known as the bassist for Woods and co-frontman of The Babies, has established himself as a distinctive voice in modern Americana with this release. "Harlem River" received critical acclaim for its haunting melodies and storytelling prowess, setting the stage for Morby's subsequent successful albums such as "Singing Saw" and "City Music." Woodsist, founded in 2006 by Jeremy Earl (of the band Woods), is renowned for championing innovative artists within indie rock, folk, and experimental genres?helping to launch careers of acts like Real Estate and Kurt Vile.
