Jean Vigo
Description:Even among cinemas greatest legends, Jean Vigo stands alone. The son of a notorious anarchist, Vigo had a brief but brilliant career making poetic, lightly surrealist films before his life was cut tragically short by tuberculosis at age twenty-nine. Like the daring early works of his contemporaries Jean Cocteau and Luis Bunuel, Vigos films refused to play by the rules. This set includes all of Vigos titles: A PROPOS DE NICE, ZERO DE CONDUITE, and LATALANTE.
The "Complete Jean Vigo" Blu-ray from Criterion is an essential collection for cinephiles, featuring the entire body of work by the legendary French filmmaker Jean Vigo. This set includes his influential films: "À propos de Nice," a satirical silent documentary; "Taris," a short about swimmer Jean Taris; the anarchic schoolboy tale "Zero for Conduct"; and his masterpiece, "L'Atalante." Each film has been meticulously restored in high definition, with supplemental features such as interviews, commentaries, and rare archival footage that provide deep insight into Vigo's artistry. The Criterion Collection is renowned for its dedication to preserving important classic and contemporary cinema with exceptional quality and scholarly extras. Jean Vigo (1905?1934) was a visionary director whose brief career left an indelible mark on world cinema. His poetic realism influenced generations of filmmakers including François Truffaut and Lindsay Anderson. Notable collaborators include Michel Simon, who starred in "L'Atalante" and was celebrated for performances in classics like "Boudu Saved from Drowning." Cinematographer Boris Kaufman later won an Oscar for his work on Elia Kazan?s ?On the Waterfront.? These artists? contributions helped shape some of cinema?s most enduring works.
