Martin Luther King, Jr.. called Odetta the Queen of American Folk music. She was one of the first female singers to forge the bond between traditional Folk music and more contemporary forms, such as the Blues, Gospel music and protest songs. With her strong, booming voice and spare guitar, she sang songs about the lives of blue-collar workers and convicts, housewives and peasants, blacks and whites. This quintessential release includes two of Odetta's finest albums from her most inspired years: The influential 1956 LP Sings Ballads and Blues (Bob Dylan once said that this record inspired him to trade in his electric guitar and amplifier for an acoustic guitar), and the long unavailable at Carnegie Hall, released on the Vanguard label in 1960. These two albums have been remastered and packaged together in this very special collector's edition. Both masterpieces are widely regarded as landmarks of the late-'50s/early-'60s Folk and Blues revival.
The CD "Sings Ballads And Blues + At C" by Odetta, released by Soul Jam Records, is a remarkable collection that brings together two of the most influential albums from one of folk and blues music?s greatest voices. This release captures Odetta's powerful interpretations of traditional ballads, spirituals, and blues standards?songs that have shaped American musical heritage. Her evocative voice and masterful guitar work shine throughout tracks like ?Muleskinner Blues,? ?Santy Anno,? and ?Another Man Done Gone.? The addition of the "At C" recordings offers listeners an intimate glimpse into her live performances, showcasing her ability to connect deeply with audiences. Soul Jam Records is renowned for its dedication to preserving classic jazz, soul, and blues recordings in high-quality formats; their releases are prized among collectors for their attention to detail and historical significance. Odetta herself was a pivotal figure in the 1950s-60s folk revival movement?her influence touched artists such as Bob Dylan and Joan Baez?and she remains celebrated for her Grammy-nominated career spanning over five decades.
