| Description: | A Musical Play by?Bob Merrill
Starring?Julie Wilson
Opened at the Vineyard Theatre, New York on May 4 1990.
Recorded at BMG Studios, New York on May 13 1992.
Set in Czechoslovakia at the outbreak of World War II, the story follows Hannah Schuler, an elderly Jewish dress designer who realizes too late the moral price of her compromise with the Nazis to protect her workers.
Julie Wilson?s not entirely melodic vocal style was seen as a dramatic match for her character.
Written, composed, and lyricized by Bob Merrill. Merrill?s final musical, coming decades after his Broadway peak, revealing a more serious, mature side of his songwriting. Tackles heavy themes of survival, resistance, complicity, and moral reckoning within a Holocaust-era setting?a departure from his more upbeat earlier work. Reviewers called it emotionally powerful and fitting as Merrill?s last piece.
