Description:Yet another masterpiece from the archives of Phil Cohran. "Armageddon" was conceived in 1958 and written down in 1963. After performing with Sun Ra and benefiting from the teachings of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, Phil Cohran's compositions changed decidedly, and he began to focus on cosmology and culture. This particular performance was recorded live at the Afro Arts Theater at 3900 S. Drexel in Chicago on February 11th, 1968. It has never been released and practically unheard in over 40 years.
"Armageddon" by Philip Cohran & The Artistic Heritage Ensemble is a remarkable CD release that captures the innovative spirit of Chicago's avant-garde jazz scene in the late 1960s. This album, produced by KATL, showcases Cohran?s mastery on instruments like the cornet and his unique approach to composition, blending African rhythms with spiritual jazz and soulful melodies. "Armageddon" stands as a testament to both musical experimentation and cultural heritage, featuring powerful ensemble performances that are both uplifting and thought-provoking. The tracks unfold with hypnotic grooves, intricate brass arrangements, and deep-rooted percussive elements?making it an essential listen for fans of boundary-pushing jazz. Philip Cohran was a visionary musician known for his work with Sun Ra?s Arkestra before founding The Artistic Heritage Ensemble. His influence extended beyond performance; he was also an educator who inspired generations of musicians in Chicago. With albums like "On the Beach," "The Spanish Suite," and now "Armageddon," Cohran cemented his legacy as one of spiritual jazz?s most important figures. KATL is renowned for its dedication to preserving rare gems from the worlds of soul, funk, and jazz. Their releases are celebrated among collectors for their high-quality remastering and attention to historical detail?ensuring timeless music reaches new audiences worldwide.
