Paul Robeson gab sein TheaterdebÃ¼t in einem Eugene O'Neill StÃ¼ck 1922 in London. Innerhalb weniger Jahre wurde er sowohl in London als auch in New York ein Star der BÃ¼hne in der Titelrolle von Kaiser Jones und wiederholte 1933 seine AuffÃ¼hrung fÃ¼r die Verfilmung. ZusÃ¤tzlich zu seinen schauspielerischen Talenten besaÃ? Robeson eine gute Stimme mit einem Ã¼beraus reichen und gefÃ¼hlvollen Bassbariton-Gesang und unterzeichnete 1925 einen Vertrag mit der Plattenfirma Victor (spÃ¤ter auch fÃ¼r Columbia) und begann seine Aufnahmekarriere mit einem Repertoire, das einige populÃ¤re Songs hervor brachte, darunter eine Reihe von Spirituals, Arbeiterliedern (â??Shortnin' Breadâ??) und Folk Songs (â??Shenandoahâ??), die die bis in die Tage der Sklaverei (oder frÃ¼her) zurÃ¼ckreichen, von denen viele die auf diesem 2CD-Set zu finden sind. -
