THE RIOT OF SPRING AND OTHER HISTORICAL DRAMAS, LARGE AND SMALL: A COLLECTION OF MUSIC COMPILED BY Ashley Hutchings is a beautiful collection of music as chosen by the Godfather of Folk-Rock himself. The title track has been specially written for this album based upon Igor Stravinsky's ballet. On the 29th May 1913, 'The Rite of Spring' by Igor Stravinsky premiered at the Theatre des Champs Elysees in Paris. Not knowing whether to be more appalled by Stravinsky's uncompromising experimentations in dissonance, tonality, rhythm and meter or by Vaslav Nijinsky's unconventional, horizontal, pigeon-toed choreography, the Parisian audience reacted as their instincts told them. They rioted. Stravinsky and Nijinsky, it seemed, had succeeded in achieving the holy grail of art - they had created something entirely new.
