 | Description: | Reissued for the first time outside of Brazil, originally released in 1972. After a few "strategic mistakes" in his career, Tom Zé found a new home at the Continental label. It was there that he made four albums for the remainder of the 1970s, beginning with this self-titled one. When this LP was released in 1972, Tom Zé had a relentless interest in the unexplored, experimental, and the unusual. These songs revealed a more mature Tom Zé, addressing social issues, outdated concepts, false traditions, and the hypocrisy from Brazil's military government.
The original press release warned: "1972 marks the beginning of a new phase in Tom Zé's career.
He decided to move into simpler forms of writing and released an album that is a result of that." Tom Zé is considered the most "paulista" of all tropicalistas. He came from Bahia, but his wry urban poetry, infused with the uncomfortable sounds of the largest metropolis of South America, is pure São Paulo. This reissue includes unseen photos, new testimonials from Tom Zé himself and a lengthy article signed by Bento Araujo, author of the book series Lindo Sonho Delirante. - Digitally remastered edition of this rare album from the Brazilian legend. Tom Zé is a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, innovator and composer who was hugely influential in the Tropicália movement of 1960s Brazil. Zé is often thought of as Brazil's answer to Zappa or Captain Beefheart; a true innovator and a true artist. This, his second solo album, is self-titled, and was released by RGE Discos in 1970. After the peak of the Tropicália period, Zé went into relative obscurity. It was only in the 1990s, when musician and Luaka Bop label founder David Byrne discovered an album recorded by Zé many years earlier, that he returned to performing and releasing new material. Continuing in a similar musical vein to GRANDE LIQUIDICAO, Tom Ze is a wonderful combination of guitars, layered of percussion and tough rock 'n' roll, underpinned by Ze's instantly recognizable vocal. BTW, Ze is one of Brazil's most sampled artists!? 1970 + © Mr Bongo 2015.
