Als Tears of Sound bezeichnete der berühmte Bassist Charlie Mingus seinen Klang: Charlie Mariano, Saxophonist, Komponist, Weltmusiker. Einer der Großen des Jazz.

Wie kein Zweiter hat Charlie Mariano den europäischen Jazz beeinflusst und Generationen von Musikern inspiriert. Im Juni 2009 starb er im Alter von 85 Jahren. Der Film begleitet ihn in seinem letzten Jahr zu seinen Konzerten und der Regisseur Axel Engstfeld hat ihm zu Hause in Köln einige Besuche abgestattet, in denen Charlie Mariano von seinem Lebensweg erzählt. Ausführliche und exklusive Konzertaufnahmen von einem Geburtstagskonzert in Stuttgart und einem Konzert in Köln lassen den Zuschauer Charlie Mariano noch einmal live erleben. - Konzertausschnitte im Kölner Stadtgarten (April 2008)
