Description:Dark Side of the Mule, recorded during a Halloween 2008 show at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston, features all the well-known Pink Floyd tracks youâ??d expect â?? with a few lesser-known ones for color. Particularly effective is â??Fearless,â? originally from Pink Floydâ??s Meddle. Here, Haynes wistfully captures the essence of the Gilmour/Roger Waters original, while the crowd noise almost mirrors the sound effects of the original Floyd recording. On â??Pigs on the Wing Pt. 2,â? Haynes appears solo with his electric guitar and builds a track arguably more powerful than the original Waters performance on Animals. â??Shine on You Crazy Diamondâ? finds Govâ??t Mule flirting with disaster. Carlsson doesnâ??t try to duplicate the keyboard textures constructed by late, underrated Floyd keyboardist Richard Wright, yet his passage is just a mesmerizing. Warren Haynes seems challenged and inspired by the keyboardist, which results in a blistering collection of blues licks â?? and a vocal which matches that intensity. Abts almost seems to restrain himself to copy the original drum track of Nick Mason. -
Few bands have a reputation for making music as consistently honest, organic, and daring as Gov't Mule. But in curveball mode, and for the first time in it's 20-year career, Gov't Mule has delved into it's vaults to create multiple configurations of it's fabled Halloween 2008 performance at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston. The show featured a long and varied set of impassioned, expertly executed Pink Floyd covers (spanning 80-plus minutes) as only the Mule can deliver, with guest saxophonist Ron Holloway (Dizzy Gillespie, Gil Scott-Heron, Little Feat, Allman Brothers). The standard edition of DARK SIDE OF THE MULE features 1 CD of Floyd covers spanning 80 minutes of music.
