| Description: | 2015 collection from the keyboardist extraordinaire, Prog legend and former Yes man. Key tracks on this 14 track compilation include "Catherine of Aragon," "Arthur" and "The Journey/Recollection." Rick Wakeman has been one of the most enduring artists of the Progressive Rock genre over the last forty years. He's served time with both the STRAWBS and YES, as well as being a prolific composer and recording artists in his own right with albums such as: 'The Six Wives of Henry VIII', 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth', 'Myths & Legends of King Arthur & the Knights of the Round Table' and 'No Earthly Connection', 'Criminal Record' and his Winter Olympic soundtrack album 'White Rock'. Today Rick remains one of Rock's most colourful characters as well as being a regular contributor to TV and radio. He has made 106 solo records and has sold more than 50 million copies worldwide. He also recently played three "Sold Out" shows with his band: The English Rock Ensemble at Royal Albert Hall in April 2014 with his revitalized version of 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth'. This is a brilliant 14-track collection from the Prog king and keyboardist extraordinaire. The 14 tracks include key material from all his major A&M albums. What you have here is a collection of the less 'proggy' tracks so a more accessible sampler for those unused to the 15-20 minutes of soaring analogue synth sound that is the norm for much of the prog rock canon.
It does have to be said that some of the tones Rick chooses are less satisfying to sit and listen to, as one of my mates said 'It's like he chose the god awful sound...then wrote a 15minute solo for it.'
Alternatively, the sound journey you go on seems occasionally to get overblown dissonance tagged onto an original and highly listenable theme and it quite a relief to return to the opening theme after your ears have been thoroughly grated.
Fortunately the tracks on this selection keep full blown progism under firm control!
A little harsh maybe but I am sure than many have felt the same way with every prog-rock composer. Whatever your taste it has to be said that Rick can pull off some wonderful soaring sounds that have transported me many times back to my teenage years. I have met the man hisself and crewed a couple of his one man shows, music can be the link to time travel and memories of past lives and loves.
If you are a real Rick fan then you'll probably buy this, just to have every recorded work; if you are new to prog-rock then this may help you immerse yourself into the sonic sound-scape of concept albums. I'd always advise Wakeman's Journey to the centre of the earth as the ultimate intro to Symphonic Narrative Concept Album or Trilogy by ELP.
No-one but No-one does this genre better as a live spectacular with Orchestra and players, than Wakeman. So pull on your loon-pans and cheesecloth, close your eyes, slide into your full ear headphones and immerse yourself in a series of mind expanding stereo sound-scapes. |
