Limited 180 gram vinyl LP pressing of this 1987 album. New Jersey Thrash Metal band Overkill were formed in 1984 and named themselves after a Motörhead album. They were one of the early Thrash bands to sign to a major label and started to become successful in the late 1980s, when the genre became popular with bands like Anthrax, Exodus, Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Testament. TAKING OVER is the second studio album by the band and was their first album to be released through Atlantic, who would release all of the band's albums up to W.F.O. (in 1994). The track 'Wrecking Crew' is considered one of the band's signature songs and was chosen to be the title of the band's official website. Both 'Wrecking Crew' and 'In Union We Stand' are almost always included on the band's set list.

If one word could describle Taking Over as an album it would be energy. This is the most energetic album the guys have ever released. Ironbound would have to be a close second. By far my favorite album from these New Jersey thrashers. The album still sounds great nearly 35 years later.

The album is made in the same vein as the debut album "Feel the Fire", that is, the same infernal mixture of traditional metal with hardcore. Starting from the first composition "Deny the Cross", the listener plunges into the abyss of the most powerful New York thrash, played at the highest speed. Why New York? Because the bands from the west coast were playing a slightly different kind of music that hadn't been so heavily influenced by the hardcore scene. "Taking Over" is the same anthem-like metal with a dirty sound, piercing vocals and a slightly muffled guitar. That is, the vocals and the rhythm section are brought to the fore, the guitar is not written in the best way and serves as a kind of background. Successes include all compositions without exception, listing which does not make sense, because they are widely known to lovers of gravity. But the main hit, no doubt, "In Union We Stand". This composition stands apart from all the songs of Overkill and would fit more into the repertoire of Manowar, the band that had the greatest influence on New York thrashers. A sort of mid-tempo heavy metal, pretentious and incendiary. A wonderful work, the main advantages of which are the unpolished sound, melodies and speed of delivery - Overkill's signature chips that accompany the band throughout their musical career.
