.. Lenox / / Reissue Of Debut Album |
 | | Description: | Gil Scott-Heron was twenty-one years old when he was signed to Flying Dutchman by Bob Thiele to make an album of his poetry. The resultant â??Small Talk at 125th and Lenoxâ? was recorded before a small live audience and, released in 1970, sat perfectly in a world where the Last Poets had just tasted Top 10 success with their debut LP. â??Small Talk at 125th and Lenoxâ? opened with a spoken word version of â??The Revolution Will Not Be Televisedâ?? and also featured poems and musical pieces like â??Omenâ??, â??Brotherâ??, â??Plastic Pattern Peopleâ??, â??Paint It Blackâ?? and â??Everydayâ?? that reflected on the black community and its condition within America at this time.
The starkest of these sharp observational pieces from Scott-Heron was â??Whitey On The Moonâ??, which recounts the US Government spending billions on landing a rocket on the moon at a time when, â??a rat done bit my sister, Nellâ?.
Like its follow-up â?? â??Pieces Of A Manâ? â?? â??Small Talk at 125th and Lenoxâ? is a classic album and we are delighted to serve it up again on vinyl in a gatefold sleeve with the original liner notes.
With current â??Big Talkâ? of going back to the moon, whilst injustice still prevails for many black people in America, â??Small Talk at 125th and Lenoxâ? still conveys a message that resonates today. - .. LENOX // REISSUE OF DEBUT ALBUMDigitally remastered edition of this 1971 album. Small Talk At 125th & Lenox was the start of Gil Scott-Heron's distinguished 40-year recording career but this album is his simplest and most hard-hitting. For the most part it features him with three percussionists performing his poetry. The rhythmic backdrop and the style of the delivery makes it more than a spoken word album. It is a classic that stands head and shoulders above similar albums of the same date. It laid the basis for Scott-Heron's emergence as one of the leading figures of the black radical movement. Here is the original of 'The Revolution Will Not Be Televised' a FM radio hit which prompted the recording of the full band version better known today. The album also includes the renowned 'Whitey On The Moon' and the much-sampled 'Brother'."Small Talk At 125th And Lenox" is the groundbreaking debut album by Gil Scott-Heron, now available in CD format from Ace Records.
