Description:	Kidane lebt friedlich mit seiner Frau Satima, seiner Tochter Toya und Issan, einem kleinen, 12 Jahre alten Hirtenjungen in den Dünen, nicht weit von Timbuktu, das in die Hände religiöser Fundamentalisten gefallen ist. In der Stadt erdulden die Einwohner ohnmächtig das Terrorregime, das von den Dschihadisten eingesetzt wurde, um ihren Glauben zu überwachen. Musik, Gelächter, Zigaretten und sogar das Fußballspielen wurden verboten. Die Frauen sind zu Schatten geworden, die versuchen, würdevoll Widerstand zu leisten. Jeden Tag werden von auf die Schnelle eingesetzten Tribunalen tragische und absurde Strafen ausgesprochen. Kidane und seine Familie bleiben von dem Chaos in Timbuktu verschont. Aber ihr Schicksal ändert sich, als Kidane aus Versehen Amadou tötet, einen Fischer, der seine Lieblingskuh GPS schlachtete.
