Description:With the sole exception of an October 24, 1947 Blue Note date, Thelonious Monk didnâ??t record any trio sides during the early years of his career other than the ones presented on this LP, which were taped for Prestige in 1952 and 1954. These were Monkâ??s first recorded versions of all of the compositions included. Considering his lack of recording opportunities, however, it canâ??t be assumed that he composed them all strictly for the 1952-1954 sessions. Some of them had been written many years earlier, as Monk is known to have already composed many of his tunes by 1944. Other than the pianistâ??s original compositions, the trio also cut two standards, â??These Foolish Thingsâ? and â??Sweet and Lovelyâ?. â??Just a Gigoloâ? was the only unaccompanied piano performance of the sessions. THELONIOUS MONK, piano On all tracks, plus: A1-A4: GARY MAPP, bass; ART BLAKEY, drums. New York, October 15, 1952. A5-A6 & B3-B4: GARY MAPP, bass; MAX ROACH, drums. New York, December 18, 1952. A7, B1-B2 & B5: PERCY HEATH, bass; ART BLAKEY, drums. Hackensack, New Jersey, September 22, 1954. [On B2 Monk plays unaccompanied piano.] All original sessions recorded by Rudy Van Gelder & produced by Bob Weinstock. - INCL. 10 BONUS TRACKS / 24BIT RM
[r=5557911] (Prestige PRLP 7027) marked the pianist's first album in a trio format. It was recorded over the course of three sessions in 1952-54 and showcases Monk backed by such luminaries as Percy Heath on bass, and Max Roach and Art Blakey on drums. Two songs that complete the sessions but were not included on the original LP have been added here, as well as the only three trio tracks from Monk's otherwise quartet or quintet Blue Note dates from the early Fifties, and all six master takes from his October 24, 1947 Blue Note studio session, which constituted Monk's earliest trio session ever. Recording dates: Tracks 1 to 4: New York, October 15, 1952 Tracks 5, 6, 9, 10: New York, December 18, 1952 Tracks 7, 8, 11, 12: Hackensack, New Jersey, September 22, 1954 Tracks 13, 14: New York, July 23, 1951 Track 15: New York, May 30, 1952 Tracks 16 to 21: New York, October 24, 1947 On track 8 Monk plays unaccompanied piano. Tracks 11 to 21 are bonus tracks. 24-bit Remastered
