 | Description: | 1974 ALBUM FROM LEGENDARY BRITISH ROCK BAND THE PRETTY THINGS NOW REMASTERED & AVAILABLE ON MADFISH
Led by founding vocalist & guitarist Phil May & Dick Taylor, The Pretty Things, iconic 1st wave R&B cult heroes, created some of the most exciting & innovative records of the sixties, early seventies & beyond. Winners of the very first Mojo Hero Award, the band have been a massive success & a huge influence on artists as diverse as David Bowie, Aerosmith, The Ramones, Bob Dylan, The Sex Pistols, The White Stripes, Kasabian & many, many more.
The band first burst onto the scene in 1965 with a blend of raw, explosive R&B, their debut album reached no. 6 in the UK album charts. Over the course of several albums, they evolved their sound, highlighted by the release of the first ever rock opera â??S.F. Sorrowâ??. They followed this with a string of albums in the 1970's which saw line ups changes & a firm following in the States.
â??Silk Torpedoâ?? is the seventh album by the band & their second without Wally Waller, the group's rhythm guitarist/bassist since 1967. The album is in line with the times, exuding a more glam rock feel, contrasting from their earlier R&B psychedelic work. A solid album from back to front, it offers a new side to the band, beginning with â??Dreamâ??, an instrumental prelude before launching into â??Joey,â?? a superb combination of piano boogie, crashing drums & melodramatic choruses draped in Hammond organ. â??Maybe You Triedâ?? is a glittering slice of glam rock with a simply killer guitar hook from Pete Tolson. Stunning album closer â??Belfast Cowboysâ?? displays a fragility not too often heard from the band. - INCLUDES BONUS MATERIALDigitally remastered and expanded edition of this 1974 album by the veteran British rockers including seven bonus tracks. Silk Torpedo was one of the Pretty Things milestone albums. The group signed to Led Zeppelins new Swan Song label in 1974, amidst great fanfare. The Led Zep men regarded Phil May & Co. As pioneers of hard rock, and they were keen to advance the career of their '60s heroes. Silk Torpedo was the debut album for the label, and the original release featured 10 songs, written mainly by Phil May with John Povey and Peter Tolson. The liner notes by long-time band manager Mark St. John gives the reader first-hand insight into the history behind the album and the bands movements at the time. The Pretty Things were the also-rans of the British Invasion, a band that never got it's due. Despite this lack of recognition, they were never quite ignored, cultivating a passionate cult that stuck with them through the decades - a cult that was drawn to either their vicious early records, where they sometimes seemed like a meaner version of the Rolling Stones, or to their 1968 psychedelic masterwork S.F. Sorrow. Some of their fans advocate for the entirety of their catalog, noting how the group adeptly shifted with the times. Despite these shifts in style, they rarely racked up hits on either side of the Atlantic. | | No. of tracks: |
