While stepping into the 1980s, Jones sought about drastic change and creative rebirth. In doing so, her next body of work would also reflect the blossoming radicalism of pop's new wave. Stripped of disco's goofier affectations, Warm Leatherette was alternately more sanguine and more severe-a bracing confluence of reggae, new-wave, and post-punk that showcased Jones' range as a performer and her uncanny, occasionally perverse vision as an interpreter of other people's songs.
