Description: | 'Hang Me, Oh Hang Me' is the sophomore album and debut for Black Hen Music from Saskatoon's The Deep Dark Woods. Recorded by the band and Ross Nykiforuk (The Northern Pikes) at Cosmic Pad Studios in Saskatoon during the winter of 2006-07, Hang Me, Oh Hang Me, draws inspiration from the long, depressing Saskatchewan winter, road trips to the Southern States, as well as the sad state of today's popular music. Mixed by Steve Dawson, Hang Me, Oh Hang Me possesses all of the same diverse songwriting as their self-titled debut but with more emphasis on arrangements and instrumentation. Fronted by Ryan T. Boldt, the lead and rhythm guitar duties are shared by Boldt and guitarist Burke C. Barlow. C.S. Mason (bass) and Lucas Goetz (drums) round out the rhythm section as well as provide the band's characteristic bright harmonies. Influenced by the likes of The Byrds, The Grateful Dead, Gram Parsons, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and Tom Waits, as well as traditional bluegrass artists like The Stanley Brothers and Carl Story, The Deep Dark Woods blur the lines between country, rock, folk, and bluegrass. From the dark, creepy 'Redwood Forest' to the joyful gospel number 'Glory, Hallelujiah', the bitter heartbreak of 'Five-Hundred Meters' and the pedal-steel driven 'They Won't Last Long', the record's songs are as heartfelt as the band's songwriters. Having shared the stage with The Sadies, Magnolia Electric Company, Oh Susanna, and Utah Phillips among others, The Deep Dark Woods will be touring across Canada in September and October. |
