Februar 1973 bei Columbia Records erschien. Das Album wurde im Jahr zuvor in den Columbia Studios in New York City aufgenommen und von Murray Krugman und Sandy Pearlman produziert. Am 12. Mai 1973 erreichte das Album Platz 122 in den Billboard 200. Der Song "Baby Ice Dog" enthält einen Text der Sängerin und Dichterin Patti Smith (die damals die Freundin von Keyboarder Allen Lanier war), die im Laufe der Bandkarriere mehrere lyrische Beiträge zum Repertoire der Band beisteuerte. Der Song "The Red & The Black", dessen Text sich auf die Royal Canadian Mounted Police bezieht, ist eine umbenannte, neu aufgenommene Version von "I'm on the Lamb But I Ain't No Sheep" aus dem gleichnamigen Debütalbum. Der Song wurde später von den Minutemen und der Band of Susans gecovert. Zur Feier des 50-jährigen Jubiläums ist Tyranny and Mutation in einer limitierten Auflage von 2000 einzeln nummerierten Exemplaren auf Translucent Blue Vinyl. -
