“Perpendicular" is the first album in the new history of Deep Purple, in which Richie Blackmore does not play guitar. This is the second attempt of Deep Purple to do without Blackmore. Tommy Bolin, who replaced him in 1975, was a high-class guitarist, but even such a replacement did not lead to anything good: the band broke up. Steve Morse, who came to replace this time, neither in class nor style of play does not correspond to the level of Deep purple. As Richie Blackmore said then: "...I sometimes liked Morse's game. But honestly, I don't understand what he's doing in Deep Purple." That says it all. "Purpendicular" is a step backwards in the work of Deep Purple. In this album, Morse's extremely weak performance is still compensated for by Jon Lord's brilliant performance. But later, when Jon Lord leaves the band and is replaced by Don Airey, as gray mediocrity as Steve Morse, the degradation of the group will go much faster. It's a pity that truly talented musicians don't get along in the same group for a long time. Deep Purple is a band whose music is entirely based on the virtuoso play of Blackmore and Lord, Gillan's powerful vocals and filigree support from Glover and Paige. The exclusion of any of them has always led to sad consequences for the group.

A great album - a repetitive story that had (when we are now watching) a happy ending - Steve Morse has done most of the work (as Tommy Bolin once) and today we have one great Deep Purple album
