 | Description: | Leon Thomas was the definitive jazz vocalist of the 1970s and his albums for Flying Dutchman are all classics.
Although he started his career in Count Basieâ??s band in the early 60s, by the latter part of the decade he had become an essential part of saxophonist Pharaoh Sandersâ?? group, alongside Lonnie Liston Smith, and co-wrote â??The Creator Has A Master Planâ?? for the album â??Thembiâ?. The success of this album led to him being offered a deal with Bob Thieleâ??s new Flying Dutchman label where he recorded five studio albums.
â??Full Circleâ? was his final album for the label and was recorded as Thomas was being asked to join Santana, and as such it is apt that he covers Santanaâ??s â??Just In Time To See The Sunâ??, turning it into a spiritual jazz classic. Elsewhere there are Motown covers such as a wonderful â??Got To Be There' but itâ??s the jazzy tour-de-forces such as â??Itâ??s My Life Iâ??m Fighting Forâ?? and â??Balance Of Life (Peace Of Mind) that have kept the demand high for this record. The musicians who back Thomas on this album include Bernard Purdie, Joe Farrell, Joe Beck, Jimmy Owens and Pee Wee Ellis.
Thomasâ?? career never really found itself on a firm footing again and only one more studio album followed â?? 1988â??s reunion with Thiele and Purdie for "The Leon Thomas Blues Bandâ? - meaning that â??Full Circleâ? was the final album from him as a contemporary singer.
This reissue is mastered from the highest quality transfers from the original master tapes. - Digitally remastered edition. Jazz vocalist Leon Thomas' final album for Flying Dutchman was recorded when he was a member of Santana. The singer created a modern blend of blues, jazz and soul. A firm favorite of current jazz star Gregory Porter, Thomas is sometimes overlooked. Produced by Bob Thiele, Thomas is backed by an all-star New York band that includes Pretty Purdie, Joe Beck, Richard Davis and James Brown alumnus Pee-Wee Ellis. As well as featuring ambitious covers of Motown songs now associated with Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder, the album features two tracks now popular with a new generation of fans. 'Just In Time To See The Sun' and 'It's My Life I'm Fighting For' have an excitement and groove that has led to their revival by DJs. Remastered from fresh 24/96 transfers, this is the finest that this album has ever sounded. | | No. of tracks: |
