Extra-Infos: Betty Schneider, Jean-Claude Brialy
Jacques Rivette
Description:One of the original critics turned filmmakers who helped jump-start the French New Wave, Jacques Rivette began shooting his debut feature in 1958, well before that cinema revolution officially kicked off with The 400 Blows and Breathless. Ultimately released in 1961, the rich and mysterious Paris Belongs to Us offers some of the radical flavor that would define the movement, with a particularly Rivettian twist. The film follows a young literature student (Betty Schneider) who befriends the members of a loose-knit group of twenty somethings in Paris, united by the apparent suicide of an acquaintance. Suffused with a lingering post-World War II disillusionment while also evincing the playfulness and fascination with theatrical performance and conspiracy that would become hallmarks for the director, Paris Belongs to Us marked the provocative start to a brilliant directorial career.
"Paris Belongs To Us" on Blu-Ray, released by Criterion, is a landmark of French New Wave cinema directed by Jacques Rivette. This 1961 film captures the enigmatic atmosphere of postwar Paris through the eyes of Anne, a young student drawn into an intricate web of intrigue and existential dread among bohemian artists and intellectuals. The Blu-Ray edition offers a meticulously restored transfer that brings out the moody black-and-white cinematography and includes insightful bonus features such as interviews and essays that contextualize its significance in cinematic history. Criterion is renowned for its dedication to preserving important classic and contemporary films with high-quality restorations, scholarly supplements, and elegant packaging. Their releases are celebrated worldwide for setting industry standards in home video presentation. Director Jacques Rivette was one of the founding figures of the French New Wave alongside Jean-Luc Godard, François Truffaut, Claude Chabrol, and Éric Rohmer. His innovative narrative techniques influenced generations; other acclaimed works include "Celine and Julie Go Boating" (1974) and "La Belle Noiseuse" (1991). Lead actress Betty Schneider delivers a nuanced performance as Anne; she starred in several notable European films during her career. Supporting actor Jean-Claude Brialy was another key figure in French cinema with roles in classics like "The 400 Blows." The ensemble cast also features actors who would go on to shape modern filmmaking both within France and internationally.
