Description:Seeking to invigorate the American documentary format, which he felt was rote and uninspired, Robert Drew brought the style and vibrancy he had fostered as a Life magazine correspondent to filmmaking in the late fifties. He did this by assembling an amazing team-including such eventual nonfiction luminaries as Richard Leacock, D. A. Pennebaker, and Albert Maysles-that would transform documentary cinema. In 1960, the group was granted direct access to John F. Kennedy, filming him on the campaign trail and eventually in the Oval Office. This resulted in three films of remarkable, behind-closed-doors intimacy-Primary, Adventures on the New Frontier, and Crisis-and, following the president's assassination, the poetic short Faces of November. Collected here are all four of these titles, early exemplars of the movement known as Direct Cinema and featuring the greatest close-up footage we have of this American icon.
The "Kennedy Films of Robert Drew & Associates" on DVD, released by Criterion, is a landmark collection that captures the pivotal moments in John F. Kennedy's political career through groundbreaking documentary filmmaking. This set includes four essential films: "Primary," "Adventures on the New Frontier," "Crisis: Behind a Presidential Commitment," and "Faces of November." Each film offers an intimate look at JFK?s rise to power and his presidency, utilizing cinéma vérité techniques that revolutionized documentary storytelling. The Criterion Collection is renowned for its dedication to preserving important classic and contemporary films with high-quality restorations and insightful bonus materials. Robert Drew, the visionary director behind these documentaries, pioneered direct cinema in America. His innovative approach allowed viewers unprecedented access into real-life events as they unfolded. Notable collaborators include D.A. Pennebaker ("Don't Look Back"), Richard Leacock ("Monterey Pop"), Albert Maysles ("Grey Gardens"), all celebrated for their influential work in documentary cinema. Their collective achievements have shaped modern nonfiction filmmaking, earning numerous accolades including Academy Award nominations and festival honors worldwide.
